High NDVI and Potential Canopy Photosynthesis of South American Subtropical Forests despite Seasonal Changes in Leaf Area Index and Air Temperature

چکیده
The canopy photosynthesis and carbon balance of the subtropical forests are not well studied compared to temperate and tropical forest ecosystems. The main objective of this study was to assess the seasonal dynamics of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and potential canopy photosynthesis in relation to seasonal changes in leaf area index (LAI), chlorophyll concentration, and air temperatures of NE Argentina subtropical forests throughout the year. We included in the analysis several tree plantations (Pinus, OPEN ACCESS

Chlorophyll fluorescence tracks seasonal variations of photosynthesis from leaf to canopy in a temperate forest.
Accurate estimation of terrestrial gross primary productivity (GPP) remains a challenge despite its importance in the global carbon cycle. Chlorophyll fluorescence (ChlF) has been recently adopted to understand photosynthesis and its response to the environment, particularly with remote sensing data. However, it remains unclear how ChlF and photosynthesis are linked at different spatial scales ...

Abstract In order to evaluate crop water stress index (CWSI) and canopy temperature of wheat cultivars under terminal drought stress, a field experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station of Shiraz University, Shiraz, during 2009 growing season. Five wheat cultivars including Shiraz, Bahar, Pishtaz, Sistan and Yavaros and four levels of water regime including well watering [Irr...
متن کاملTwo decades of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index changes in South America: identifying the imprint of global change
Estimates of carbon uptake at the continental scale become urgently needed as the role of countries as net sinks or sources of carbon gains political and economic importance. Despite uncertainties related to radiation use efficiency, the amount of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) intercepted by the canopy is a reliable estimator of primary production. Theoretical and empirical data sup...
متن کاملSeasonal changes in the temperature response of photosynthesis in canopy leaves of Quercus crispula in a cool-temperate forest.
Understanding seasonal changes in photosynthetic characteristics of canopy leaves is indispensable for modeling the carbon balance in forests. We studied seasonal changes in gas exchange characteristics that are related to the temperature dependence of photosynthesis in canopy leaves of Quercus crispula Blume, one of the most abundant species in cool-temperate forests in Japan. Photosynthetic r...
متن کاملAn NDVI-Based Vegetation Phenology Is Improved to be More Consistent with Photosynthesis Dynamics through Applying a Light Use Efficiency Model over Boreal High-Latitude Forests
Remote sensing of high-latitude forests phenology is essential for understanding the global carbon cycle and the response of vegetation to climate change. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) has long been used to study boreal evergreen needleleaf forests (ENF) and deciduous broadleaf forests. However, the NDVI-based growing season is generally reported to be longer than that based...
